The Writing's on the wall

Here at Maidstone Borough Council, we are making every
effort to improve the environment where you live and
make Maidstone a cleaner, brighter place.
Unfortunately, graffiti is all too common in today's world. In
an effort to stamp out graffiti, we are channelling our
resources into cleaning up public spaces.
Anyone caught will be issued an on-the-spot fine.
Maidstone Borough Council and the Police are working
together to locate problem areas, clean them up and clamp
down on anti-social behaviour.
We can't do this alone! We need your help to be truly
successful. By working together, we can make a real
difference to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

..... but not for long!

What Maidstone Borough  Council is doing:

Removing graffiti from all council owned property as quickly as possible

Working with Kent County Council and young people to tackle graffiti

Providing purpose built graffiti walls for teenagers to use

Employing Community Wardens to monitor the borough daily

Having Grounds Maintenance Monitors and Highways Inspectors also keeping a close eye on vandalism.

 What the Police are doing:
Assessing worst hit areas and arranging for extra patrols there
Working together with other agencies to tackle graffiti
Employing Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's) who have the
power to issue on-the-spot fines to those people caught in the act
Employing a Crime Reduction Co-ordinator for each area in the Borough.

What can you do?

If you see graffiti in the town or countryside, please report it to our Cleansing Hotline on 01622 602162.

Keep private property clear of graffiti. You can reduce the risk of getting graffiti on your property by:

SHOWING CLEAR OWNERSHIP OF YOUR PROPERTY. INSTALLING FENCES THAT ARE AN EFFECTIVE BARRIER TO GRAFFITI. USING DARKER AS OPPOSED TO LIGHTER PAINTS . CONSIDERING THE ABSORBENCY OF MATERIALS YOU INTEND TO BUILD WITH. PLANTING VINES AND FAST GROWING CREEPERS TO PROTECT WALLS AND FENCES. INSTALLING SPRINKLER SYSTEMS ALONG GARDEN BEDS THAT ADJOIN 'HIGH RISK' WALLS. IF GRAFFITI IS A RECURRING PROBLEM, CONSIDER A PROTECTIVE WALL COATING (PARTICULARLY FOR POROUS SURFACES SUCH AS BRICK) TO ENSURE EASE OF REMOVAL IN THE FUTURE.

Graffiti needs to be removed before:

It has chance to harden.

Before more is added.

Before it changes the character of the neighbourhood.

Top Tips:

Fast removal is always the best option, preferably within 24 hours.

Use graffiti removal products.

Coatings may make removal easier.

Avoid the use of toxic products in removal. Solvents may cause damage to the environment.

Painting over graffiti is generally the most cost effective method of removal.
